Eugene turned off the big neon red sign on his door that read: Open. He locked the door and picked up a broom. Eugene swept the floor with slow and careful strokes, making sure not to miss a spot. Zak sat in the same chair looking over multiple pie recipes. He had many more scattered on the table. There was cherry pie, apple pie, pecan pie and even chocolate pie. Zak was looking for the easiest to bake for the next day. Eugene swept the floor under Zak and stopped to look at the recipes with him. He eventually went back to sweeping and made a pile of trash and dirt. He walked over to the corner and retrieved the dustpan. He swept up the dirt and trash, then threw it away. He set the broom down and walked over to Zak to collect the recipes.

“Zak, we have to get to sleep, and it looks like you could use a charge. Remember, tomorrow is a big day for you. Get up early to bake the fresh pies and set them out for opening.”

Zak nodded slowly, his eyes sticking to the apple pie recipe.

“Apples. The red fruits. I remember them, they grew on trees. Humans taught us to go apple picking. We didn’t do too well, but it was ok, the humans always helped us.”

“Zak, the humans have been dead for tens of thousands of years, and apples are just clones of what the original was,” Eugene said to Zak.

“I know the humans are all dead, but when I was alive they weren’t. They were so happy and helpful. I wish I knew what happened to them.”

“I bet they were great. Now off to bed.”

Zak picked up the recipes. He put them into the box and into their correct sections. Zak stared into the box, he thought the recipes were like him. Only allowed to live in sections, and only used when needed, after that, it was back to the box. Zak stood up, the box in one hand and Buddy fast asleep on his shoulder.

“Eugene,” Zak started. “How can you eat pie while I cannot?” Zak asked.

“The generation 1-5 had a pull-out tray in their chest where they would dump food and drink. The gen 5-8 were unable to eat and drink. The 9-12 had a slot in their neck where the food went and nozzle next to it where they could drink,” Eugene answered as they both made their way out of the dining area.

They walked through the kitchen and to a set of stairs leading to Eugene's home. As the two walked up the stairs Zak found it fascinating that someone lived above where they worked. He wondered if everyone did that. Eugene reached the top of the stairs and unlocked the door. The door opened revealing Eugene’s home. He had unlit candles on his coffee table and plants hung from the ceiling and some placed neatly on a shelf. A humidifier could be seen on the coffee table; it was a small sphere emitting a foggy substance.
